Letterkenny IT and Galway Mayo Institute from the Irish Colleges North Division
LYIT college rugby team kicked off the league campaign for the 09/10 season with a hard fought victory over their conterparts from GMIT.
The game which seen the LYIT come from behind to win 7points to 5 points came about when a try by the GMIT scrum half in the first half had the visitors leading 5-0 at the break, however the crucial conversion was missed wide left.
The boys from LYIT found themselves under massive pressure in the first half with a strong wind and heavy rain making life difficult for handling as silly errors lead to chances being spilt but they upped the tempo in the second half and used the wind to out advantage.
A chip over the top from scrum half, Ronan Boyle, was chased by winger Stephen Devine who managed to capitalised on hesitancy in the GMIT defence to collect the ball and dive over the line. Out half Michael Turvey slotted the extra points. To give the LYIT a 7 points to five lead
It was the strong defence and powerful running by the Letterkenny lads which layed the foundations for this fine victory. The team was lead today by flanker and man of the match Dave Harty who vital crucnhing tackles made the difference in the end when he cut the GMIT scrum half in two to cause a knock on, only for the final whistle to be sounded ..
The Lads from LYIT would like to thank their visitors from GMIT and their coach Bernie Kelly for a hard fought game! and would like to wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.
Next the boys of LYIT take the short trip to the Maiden City for their games against North West Regional College for what is sure to be a very tough encounter
