Clodagh through to Irish Women’s Trials

The rise of women’s rugby took another step forward in Donegal last week with the news that Clodagh Mc Cool has been selected for Irish trials. This achievement is highly respectful considering Clodagh only played her first game of contact rugby in January this year when she started playing for the City of Derry women’s team. Clodagh is also a member of the U18 girls coaching team at Letterkenny RFC and a teacher at Loreto Secondary, Letterkenny where she has also introduced rugby to the all girls’ school.

The first step towards the Irish trials started back in April when the invitation was given to join the Ulster women’s squad for summer training. The hard work and dedication of training in Magherfelt and Belfast was repaid when she took part in the Inter Pro series against, Munster, Connacht and Leinster in September. It was down to her efforts during these games and commitment to training which resulted in the Winger being selected for the Irish Trials.

The trials will take place next Saturday in Dublin on the same day as Ireland v All Blacks. The aim of the trial is to select a squad for the Six Nations in January which will take part on the same schedule as the RBS Championships.
On the back of the continued success of women’s and girls’ rugby the IRFU Ulster Branch will be running a Women’s ‘come and try day’ in Letterkenny on the 14th December.

Ballyshannon Rugby Club Minis

The Lakeside located north of the Assaroe Lake and the ESB Power Station on the Ballyshannon to Belleek Road is home to a new breed of rugby player.
They may not be 6’ 2” tall and weigh 18 stones but they certainly pack a punch! This is the home ground of the Ballyshannon Minis R.F.C. Every Saturday morning come rain or shine the fifty or so girls and boys aged between eight and twelve take to the new state of the art all-purpose 3G pitch. And brave the elements as well as each other.

The minis section in Ballyshannon is going from strength to strength every week.
Kids travel from all over the Ballyshannon and surrounding areas in order to take part. Most of the sessions start with games and follow through with the development of skills needed to play a structured contact game. Every child that takes part is progressing both mentally and physically.

They are also running around with a big smile on their faces.
Also, some of the first team members of Ballyshannon R.F.C. are on hand to deliver tips and aid in coaching the necessary and appropriate skills. In the future games will be arranged against various other clubs, such as those in Donegal Town, Letterkenny and Inishowen. So, they can really test themselves and put their training into practice!

New Players and volunteers are always more than welcome to turn up. Contact Frankie O’Donnell on 087 811 6189 for further details.

Eight Donegal Players selected for Ulster U17 and U16 Trials.

Following a County trial on the 1st November 6 players have been nominated for Ulster U17 West trials and Ulster U16 Northwest trials. The U17 players are Patrick Doherty, Dermot Mc Gonagle, Paul Mc Carroll, Eanna Newton, Carndonagh CS; Adam Mc Connell, Letterkenny RFC. U16 Northwest trailists are Ryan Kettle, St Columba’s College and Jason Mc Elenney, Pauric Mc Gonagle, Carndonagh CS.
The players will take part in training sessions and fixtures during November and December. If successful they will then be included in the squads going forward toward next year’s Ulster Youth U18 and U17 training squads.
