Letterkenny Schools Tag Rugby 6 Nations Festivals.
Three of the many Letterkenny National Schools who are currently receiving Tag Rugby coaching through the Donegal Community Rugby Project, came together this week to take part in a special 6 Nations Tag Rugby Festival.
The festival which was aimed at letting the pupils put their newly learnt rugby skills and training in to practice was held at Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny. On the Day each school was invited to bring two teams of 12 players to take part in a round robin style festival, with each team fielding 8 players at any one time during the games.
Tag rugby which is the Non Contact version of Rugby, is a great way to introduce the game of rugby to young people.
The schools that took part where Scoil Choilmcille, Educate Together N.S and Ballyraine National School. With all teams playing off against each other in games that lasted 8 minutes. There was great school rivalry when each school played off against its own sister team to see who could claim the school yard bragging rites.
Commenting on the Festival, DCRP Youth Development Officer Jonathan Quigley said “It was great to see all the Kids have fun! Putting in to play the newly acquired skills that they have received from their Tag Rugby Session, Thanks has to go to the Teachers/Coaches with in each school for their continued support of the Development of Rugby. So of the potential Irish and Ulster rugby players could come from the bunch of kids that where here today! It looks positive that the future of Irish rugby is alive with in Donegal”
The Donegal Community Rugby Project would like to thank all the Children and Staff of each school for coming along on the day, Also Jarryd Bennett for Helping with the officiating games. And finally to Rhonda and Steven at Aura Leisure Centre for all there help in Providing Facilities for the Event,
