Irish Colleges North Division 2 Match Report

Sligo IT v Letterkenny IT
Venue: BALLYHAUNIS R.F.C

Score Sligo IT 22 – Letterkenny IT 10

Letterkenny IT Rugby Team Resume their Irish Colleges campaign for 2010 when the Travelled to Ballyhaunuis, Co. Mayo to Play Sligo IT, the game which was initially planned for Sligo RFC had to be moved only hours before kick off as the pitch at Sligo became unplayable due to over night rain. A quick called was made and arrangement were made so the game could go ahead at Ballyhanius RFC.It was LYIT who got off to a great start when a dominant scrum had them encamped in the Sligo half for most of the fist period. The dead lock was finally broke when a clearance kick from Sligo was caught by the fullback Stephen Devine who carvered through the Sligo defence to score out in the corner, unfortunately the conversion was missed right of the post. It was then the turn of Sligo to get on the score sheet, when slack defending and lack of concentration at a penalty just outside the 22 allowed man of the match Joe English to dart through to touch down.

Things went from bad to worse for the IT when Poorly struck clearance kick from Outhalf Michael Turkey was Charged down to see Sligo increase the lead to 12 – 5 at halftime
The second half start strongly for the LYIT with great forward pressure coming from Carl Egan whose barn storming runs took LYIT deep into the Sligo half, but from a unclear penalty decision at the next ruck, saw Letterkenny quickly on the back foot with the Sligo scrum half darting pass the defence to run in from 30 Meters.

This increased the score to 17 -5 followed up minutes later with Sligo fourth try of the games when outstanding Joe English bagged his brace when he crossed the line on the 70th Minute. The game looked all but over at this point for LYIT but guts and determination from the entire Team saw the claw back five points to bring the final score line Sligo IT 22 Letterkenny IT 10.

The Letterkenny IT Rugby would like to thank Ballyhanius RFC for the use of the superb facilities also to Mc Hugh Bar Sligo Town for the great food and hospitality they received after the game. Next week Letterkenny are at Home to Dundalk, in a now must win game for IT if they have any hopes of making it to the Semi Finals of the All Irelands. The boys will be training hard over the next few days to make sure that they are in the best possible position to take all 4 points next week.
